Red Tango Creator Talks with The Tiniest Tiger + Giveaway

Congratulations to Sheree1022  the winner of the Classic Red Tango Top!

Thank you everyone for being a part of The Tiniest Tiger Community,

Friends, please welcome Cynthia Petrovic to our The Tiniest Tiger’s Conservation Cub Club.  Cynthia is an amazingly talented artist and she is the creator of Red Tango, a vintage modern cat with the iconic curly tail, one of my favorites! Cynthia is so nice, she is  giving a beautiful  Classic Red Tango Top to one lucky Friend. So ask a question or share a comment for Cynthia below this post and you might be dancing in a super cool Red Tango shirt!

Gracey: Welcome Cynthia to The Tiniest Tiger’s Conservation Cub Club!  We are honored to have such a creative genius join us for a chat.  As you know we are a community of cat lovers, so Red Tango, CupCake Kitty, and Boo too as well as all of your characters are right up our alley!  Were you born super talented or did you learn to draw in school or perhaps a combination of both talent and training?

Cynthia: Hi Gracey and thank you for asking me to chat! Like any sort of talent, we all have the “seed” of potential inside of us, and it takes years and years of dedication and practice to get good at anything we strive to do excellently. The good thing is, when you are passionate about something, and it is truly your calling, the learning part is fun and enjoyable. Even if you miss the mark sometimes, you enjoy the challenge to get it right. I started drawing when I was about two, it was always a way I expressed myself..drawing my family, my pets, things I did, it was sort of a “camera” for me. I always enjoyed making up my own stories, so eventually the drawings ended up in comic book form, so I could both draw and write.

Gracey: Did you share your habitat with cats when you were growing up and is that what inspired you to create your cat characters?

Cynthia: Funny thing is, I’ve never owned a cat! When I was a kid and used to draw comics of my various adventures, I would always draw myself as a cat, not a person. Maybe it started there. When I was older and more into design, the cat just seemed to be a very natural animal to use because it had an elegance to it and built in popularity.

Gracey: Yes, I agree. We cats are just naturally good looking . I can understand why you were drawn to us. When did you first draw the iconic curly tail on Red Tango?

Cynthia: It was inspired by a little statue I found at the Pasadena Rose Bowl swap meet back around 1999, it had this long neck to it so I started playing with that sort of shape. I named it Red Tango because Tango was the name of my friend’s cat when we were kids. And Red because the statue was red!

Gracey: You are also an animator for Warner Brothers, which seems like a super exciting thing to be!  You must be busy with all of the ideas coming into your head all the time.  How do you manage?

Cynthia: I think you need to be good with time management. I concentrate on work during the day, then at lunchtime I switch over and work on some of my own stuff. Then after work, when I get home, it’s RedTango time again. You just have to set very clear times and boundaries. My goal when I started by business was no matter how small it was, I took one step forward a day..meaning, one phone call, one drawing, whatever it was..I made sure I set aside the time to get it done.

Gracey: One step at a time is great advice for us. My mom first saw Red Tango when she was passing through the Detroit airport and we have loved your designs ever since we first saw them.  Where can our Friends find Red Tango products?

Cynthia: You can find them at tangoland.com, in the giftshop section. They are also floating around the web, on EBay (for some of the items that are older) or other online giftshops.

Gracey: I saw your new shirt design Martini Cat recently on monderncat.net They described Martini Cat as a hip kitty with retro graphic style.  I think all of your designs are amazing.  Who would you say is the Red Tango customer?

Cynthia: Mostly little girls on up to their grandmothers! I was surprised because I thought for sure the demographic would stay much younger, like college age, but because the designs are tasteful and simple, women of all ages love them. I also found guys love them too because they make great gifts for wives and girlfriends!! Some day I may make a men’s line of shirts…there’s been some encouragement on that end so we’ll see!

Gracey: Yes, I think all ages love Red Tango too! Thank you again for spending some time with all of us here on The Tiniest Tiger’s Conservation Cub Club.  I hope that your designs keep making us smile for many years to come.

Cynthia: Thank you so much Gracey, and for all you’ve done. As a child I was a member of Greenpeace and Ranger Rick’s nature clubs, so you’re a cat after my own heart! The earth and it’s many creatures need our care, now moreso than ever.

Friends, remember if you have any questions or you would like to share a comment about Red Tango please type it in the comment section below this post.  One lucky Friend will be receiving a Classic Red Tango Top ( you will be able to choose your size). We will be picking the winner on June 27!  Thank you everyone.

How long has Red Tango been around? Love that cat. I think it’s really cool that you drew yourself as a cat.   Great interview Gracey.  Love all that you do.

  • Chatters

you can really see the personality of the red tango cat in all your work.  I am sure cats from all over think they were the inspiration for your design and I think in a way they were.  Great ideas for brithday and Christmas gifts!

I’ve seen the Red Tango design appear here and there for a while now, and it was great to meet the creator of Red Tango. Oh, and … yes, I’d love to win a Red Tango top, too! :-)

  • MyKinKStar

I can’t wait to win, so I’m ordering NOW!

  • Dega717

I love your designs and bought a rectangular green pill box through the Animal Rescue Site. Your graphic art reminds me of Josh Agle’s Shag work but stands on its own strongly and distinctively. Just last night, I heard a lecture on George Nelson. Do you ever study architects and interior designers from the 60s for inspiration?

Great interview, Gracey! You are indeed a super sleuth and dig up lots of great info on the industry. Here are a couple of questions we have. Will Cynthia ever be adding a cat to her Pack? Does she have any animals right now? Thanks for posting this!
