The Tiniest Tiger Giveaway Winner Image
Super Hurrah and Congratulations to Angela Gebhardt,

the winner of Lazy Leopard’s Look Like Me Giveaway!

Lazy Leopard's Look Like Me Giveaway

Happy Holidays from our habitat to yours.

Lazy Leopard wanted me to deliver his message to you because he is a little shy when it comes to public speaking. You might not know this but the Leopard is one of the most elusive of the big cats. So Lazy Leopard really can’t help himself that he prefers to stay out of the limelight. But he put together a nice giveaway package and he wanted me to include a little message too about his wild cousins.

The wild leopard is one of the world’s most persecuted big cats. The beautiful fur of the leopard is highly sought after and to make matters worse, today the  demand for leopard skin is increasing among members of South Africa’s Shembe Baptist Church, which has adopted the Zulu practice of wearing spotted cat fur, mostly leopard, during religious celebrations. Even though trade in leopard skins is illegal in South Africa, the Shembe’s estimated 5 million members are spreading the practice.

Last year Tristan Dickerson, Panthera’s Leopard Program Coordinator visited several Shembe gatherings to research the amount of leopard skins being used at these events. It was estimated that nearly 1,000 leopard skins were either worn or being sold at just one of the gatherings that he attended.

Tristan spent the past year working with designers and clothing companies to create high quality and affordable faux leopard skins, which he will present at future Shembe gatherings.   At one of the recent events, there was a large number of faux leopard skins being worn by children and elders, and this is a sign of hope for Africa’s leopard populations.

If you are interested, here is a short video with more details of Tristan’s important work:

Brilliant idea isn’t it?

    Go FAUX! 🙂

  • Honestly i think even fake/faux fur is tacky. I don’t understand why someone would want to wear something that even mimics an animals’ hide/fur.  THis is a nice prize with a greater message for us all.

  • Lisa

I even get nervous with faux fur and would actually like it to say “man-made” on the label when having faux fur. Don’t want any loop holes! I like fur where it’s meant to be: On the live, thriving animal!

  • Patricia

I think that I will never look like Lazy Leopard – even with the hat and scarf – BUT I can wear them and wish I looked like him – and know that no one was harmed by my new scarf and hat (and bag!!) – and when my earrings swing back and forth I will know that I’ve done my part to help those who need help and to go forth and help in a more concrete way.

  • Lauren Summers

Faux fur only. I don’t get why someone would want to wear a poor animals fur

  • Angela Gebhardt

There is no other fur to wear than faux fur!  I have signed many petitions and emailed those in public positions to outlaw such cruelty.  I also use FB as a platform to continue to spread the word so…absolutely this is the only way to go!  Keep on spreading the word!!!!

  • I cry and I cry when animals are skinned alive. How can some people be so cruel? Animal fur is the furthest thing from cute. Anybody with a soul can see. I wish this world were more friendly to you, Lazy Leopard. Leopard print is my favorite print, but it would never cross my mind even ONCE to wear REAL leopard skin!!! All creatures deserve a full, healthy and happy life. My Christmas wish is that all cats, big and small, are safe, warm and happy. I love you, Lazy Leopard. Faux fur is the only fur!!!

  • Elizabeth Flynn

Absolutely, Lazy Leopard!  No human should EVER wear anything but faux or fake fur! The real fur belongs on the beautiful animals that it is intended for.

  • Kate Skilton

I won’t even wear faux fur. I think it’s all in poor taste.

  • Elizabeth Petry

The only FUR I will wear around MY NECK:
Is the HAIR I will lose (that falls on my shoulders) during my CHEMOTHERAPY SESSIONS for my NH Lymphoma—-as well as holding my DLH Calico/Torbie, Portia!!
(Or maybe the Portia fur I have to roll off my black yoga pants!!)

  • Real fur belongs on live animals and live animals belong in the wild and we need to protect every last bit of wild land left.

  • I used to have a button that said, “Make no mistake, my fur is fake.” Fake or faux fur is the only option. Tristan is my new hero.

  • Amy Orvin

Absolutley!!! No animals should be harmed in the making of fur or in anything. Thanks for the chance. It’s a great giveaway!

  • Knightdrk2

Absolutely, Lazy Leopard, faux fur is the only way to go.  Real fur belongs on the animals it was intended for and where it looks so much more beautiful than it would on humans.

  • Kim White

    Faux fur only!

  • Adrienne Ezell

faux fur all the way! Cruelty is NEVER in style!!

  • Kittyspike08536

Faux fur is the only way to go – even as far as more “domestic” animals go such as rabbit, etc. I refuse to wear any fur that is real. The synthetic has really come a long way as far as feel and looks, so why spend a zillion dollars on something that only made it into the store because an animal was captured, and afraid, hurt, and then killed over.

I am a big proponent of big cats – I understand that their skins are taken by local people often in connection with ritual. I can respect that, but we are at a point now where if those practices continue, big cats will vanish from this planet.

  • Yes, only faux fur. Never had any desire to own animal fur anything.   I encountered an individual wearing an animal fur coat at a recent function I attended.  As some of the ladies were ooohing and awing over the soft fur, the only thing going thru my mind was the picture of the animal that was once wearing it.  If it was opulence she was going for, she missed the mark with this animal lover.

  • Webgalpat

Faux fur is the only way to go IF you like that style. There is no reason to raise/kill animals just so we can be fashionable. Much of the faux fur looks pretty close to the real thing plus it is less expensive.

  • not sure where i am supposed to put my email…. i really dont want to just post it here, so i assume if i win you can contact me thru my facebook??

  • I think it is so sad to kill a living animal just to wear its fur.  I just don’t understand people who would want to wear real fur.  I love all cats big and small and would never wear real fur.  i actually got fired from a clothing store because i refused to sell some items that was lined with rabbit fur.  i was so sick to see that.  it made me so sad.

I’m with Gracey; faux fur is the only kind of fur for me.  Thanks for all that you do to help cats big and small, and to educate people on the importance of conservation.  fiona64 at livejournal dot com.  Thank you!

  • Willow1210

The only fur I will ever wear is faux fur

  • Magwhisk

Absolutely Gracey, faux fur all the way!!!  Let the animals keep their skin, and we can love them while they still breathe!!!  Tell Lazy Leopard I enjoyed the article too!!!  xoxox to all!!!

  • Cam

Dear Lazy Leopard, I TOTALLY think humans should wear faux fur…..its pretty and warm but doesn’t hurt ANY animals! Thanx for a chance to win!
