Mercy’s Story as Told by Gracey
Our Cat Eddie
Our Cat Annie
The new year has arrived and with it came a new responsibility for Eddie and me. It is time for us to follow Gracey’s paw prints caring about all cats big and small. Even though we are still kittens, we have grown a bit and learned a lot from Lazy Leopard and Bad Kitty. They have been guiding us and with their help we feel we can begin. After all, small paws united can make a big difference.
I am going to let Eddie go first.
We want to tell you a story…
Just a few short months ago, I was waiting for my forever home in a cage with Eddie at the Grayson County Humane Society. Donna and her team took really great care of us. They made sure we were loved, received snuggles and attention so we would be socialized and ready for adoption. The Grayson team makes sure they capture the best photo of all cats and dogs at the shelter so that when the photos are shared, people from all over will see their faces with the hope that someone will fall in love and adopt them.
It snowed overnight Monday. Not much, just a couple of inches. Enough to cover the ground and the golden blanket of ginkgo leaves that danced to the ground over the weekend. I missed the leaves falling this year and that was fine with me. You weren’t here to watch with us and that was one of our favorite things to do in November. Your dad said the leaves fell so quickly that even though he was home he missed them too. I think that might have been on purpose.
I went to Washington D.C. for the Alley Cat Allies conference. I learned a lot about community cats and what we can all do to help them coexist with humans. When Becky Robinson, the founder of Alley Cat Allies, asked me how I came to be a cat advocate, I told her your story of how we found you after being dumped at the dog pound and that I bottle fed you and hoped you would grow strong and thrive. I told her your story and she smiled and said, how amazing it is that many people become cat advocates because of rescuing one special kitten.
Later I thought about how you fit in the palm of my hand and I used to put you under my coat, zip it up and you would ride there, snug and warm. I think of you every day. Six months since you’ve been gone. Six months without you.
Your video The Tiniest Tiger’s Snow Adventure won the CatVenture category at The Friskies. This was an amazing surprise. After I returned to my seat from accepting the award your video was shown to the audience. Your dad and I weren’t expecting to be hit so hard with sadness seeing you up on that big screen. I had watched that video many times at home, but during the video when you climb back into your heated thinking circle and the words Home Sweet Home were displayed, I felt a tear roll down my cheek. I looked at your dad and he just shook his head no, like don’t look at me because I understand and feel the same way.
Simon’s Cat Scary Legs
We love Simon’s cat and this one Scary Legs really made me laugh. Many people are afraid of spiders and I have to be honest, I used to be one of them. I could barely stand to be in the same room with a spider but I never wanted to kill them. I liked to relocate them back outside and at times this took a lot of courage to accomplish. In fact, more often than not it involved deep breaths, involuntary shuddering, shivering and repeatedly telling myself to stay calm while I balanced the spider on the end of a broom or yardstick.
The Tiniest Tiger’s Snow Adventure is a Friskies Finalist
Friends, we did it! We are one of the official Finalists in The Friskies. Your support helped Gracey’s video The Tiniest Tiger’s Snow Adventure make the top 12! Thanks to Friskies we are heading to New York City to find out if our video won the 2013 best video for CatVenture at The Friskies
Saturday, we decided to cut the clutter in our house. We try to keep things in order, but even with the best of intentions, things seem to accumulate. We began in the kitchen cleaning out all the drawers. This seemed to be of particular interest to Annie. She stayed right beside Paul while he sorted and organized the cookie sheets and cooling racks.
