Best Friends Leads The Way to No-Kill LA #SaveTheKittens

Best Friends Kitten Day

Kitten Nursery at Salt Lake County Animal Services

Happy National Kitten Day!

We all love kittens! They are sweet, mischievous and cute all rolled up into one.  And kittens grow up to be the cats that become our best friends and companions.  But did you know that kittens are in more danger than any other animal when they are dropped at a shelter?

Newborn kittens need round-the-clock care and that is hard to provide.  For this reason, kittens are the most frequently killed pets in shelters.  It is a bitter bill to swallow, isn’t it?

And this is nowhere more apparent than in Los Angeles, where in 2014, 61% of animals killed in shelters were kittens. Best Friends Animal Society® wants to change the survival rate for kittens.

Best Friends Knows How To Save Kitten Lives

Best Friends knows how to save these lives.  Right now in Los Angeles, shelters are flooded with kittens and their nursery is full nearly every day. Volunteers care for and feed kittens around the clock, every two hours for the youngest ones. They are saving the lives of kittens every day.

Los Angeles on the Brink of Becoming Largest No-Kill City in Nation

Best Friends Kitten Nursery

Los Angeles is on the brink of becoming the largest no-kill city in the nation, setting the stage for the rest of the country to follow suit. Kittens — believe it or not — are the little animals who represent one of the biggest challenges on the way to no-kill. Progress is being made, but the kitten programs need to expand.

Best Friends could save 4,400 more little lives if they could build a second kitten nursery. The new kitten nursery will help to make Los Angeles a no-kill city.

So you might be asking why is this important if I don’t live in Southern California?  If Los Angeles can become no-kill, it can serve as a model for the rest of the country. If we can solve the issue there, then we can do this anywhere–the very heart of our mission to Save Them All.

The Need is Urgent. We can Save Them All. But only together.

Best Friends is working hard this month to educate people about this important cause and asking for help to raise the funds needed to get the additional kitten nursery.

Because of your support of Triple T Studios, we were able to make a donation to this important campaign to #SaveTheKittens this National Kitten Day.

About Best Friends Animal Society®

Best Friends Animal Society is the only national animal welfare organization focused exclusively on ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. A leader in the no-kill movement, Best Friends runs the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals, as well as lifesaving programs in collaboration with its nationwide network of members and partners working to Save Them All®. In Utah, Best Friends leads the No-Kill Utah (NKUT) initiative, which is focused on ending the killing of dogs and cats in state shelters by 2019, and operates a pet adoption center in the Sugar House neighborhood of Salt Lake City and a spay/neuter clinic in Orem. Since its founding in 1984, Best Friends has helped reduce the number of animals killed in American shelters from 17 million per year to about 4 million.

My human has seen the kitten nursery at Best Friends L.A., and it is pretty amazing – it’s exciting to think how many more kittens could be saved with a second nursery!

No one believes in saving kittens (and all other animals) lives more than our momma. Her lost her job a little over 3 years ago (she had been there over 17 years) because of trying to save 3 tiny baby kittens. Two of the babies did survive, but sadly one did not make it. Not for lack of trying though. The gentleman that helped her was the President of a local rescue and also a Veterinarian. They were all so very sick when she got them and he spent so much time and love on them all. The two that survived became part of his own family of *20 something* kittehs he and his wife have raise and share their home with. They named the kittehs *Flynn and Tip*. To this day, momma says she would do it all over again! No regrets! xoxoxo Dancer and the SDR Clan

Wow, we didn’t know that happened to your mom. That is so sad she was let go for trying to save the kittens. Your mom is a true hero for kittens and all cats.

Hi, I'm Joanne and I love all cats. With a Global Field Master of Zoology degree focused on big cat conservation, I like to learn and talk about big cats too. I share my habitat with Paul and we were adopted by our cats Annie, Eddie and Mercy. The Tiniest Tiger has a fierce following of cat lovers and we'd love it, if you'd join us.
