Cats Are Minimalists: Here’s Why.

Joanne's Blog

25 Aug

In a way, you could say that cats have some minimalist tendencies! Here’s why:

1. Cats Are Minimalists: Simplicity in Needs:

  • Cats don’t require much to be content—just food, water, a cozy place to sleep, and some affection (on their terms, of course). They seem to embrace the idea of “less is more,” needing just the essentials to be happy.

2. Efficient Use of Space:

  • Cats are masters at making the most out of their environment. Whether it’s squeezing into a small box, curling up in a sunbeam, or finding the perfect perch, they use space efficiently and seem to appreciate the simplicity of a well-chosen spot.

3. Selective Affection:

  • Cats are often selective about their interactions and how they spend their time. They choose their moments of affection carefully, preferring quality over quantity, which can be seen as a minimalist approach to relationships.

4. Appreciation of Solitude:

  • Many cats enjoy their alone time, often retreating to a quiet corner or a high perch to observe the world without much fuss. They seem to appreciate the peace and simplicity of being in their own company.

5. Cats are Minimalist at Play:

  • While cats enjoy playtime, they often find joy in the simplest toys—a crumpled piece of paper, a feather, or even just chasing a shadow. They don’t need a lot of bells and whistles to be entertained.

6. Cleanliness and Order:

  • Cats are known for their grooming habits and their preference for a clean litter box and environment. Their fastidious nature might be seen as a desire for order and simplicity in their surroundings.

While cats might not be minimalists in the human sense (especially considering their tendency to hoard toys or take over entire sofas and beds!), their appreciation for simplicity and efficiency in many aspects of life does give them a certain minimalist charm!

Joanne McGonagle Namibia

Hi, I’m Joanne and I love all cats. With a Global Field Master of Zoology degree focused on big cat conservation, I like to learn and talk about big cats too. I share my habitat with Paul and we were adopted by our cats Annie, Eddie and Bob.

The Tiniest Tiger has a fierce following of cat lovers and we’d love it, if you’d join us.
