The Little Things Can Mean the Most #gethealthyhappy Giveaway

Joanne's Blog

3 Oct

Annie and Eddie in a box

Sometimes it is the little things that mean the most in our daily lives.  For cats this certainly seems true. No matter how many cat toys your cats have available to play with, set out a cardboard box and the box quickly becomes their favorite thing.  I confess that in my office at this moment, there is a cardboard box and a fairly good amount of brown paper creatively placed on the floor.  All three cats love to create their own sculptures with the brown paper.  When I am working and I hear the crinkle, crinkle, crinkle of the brown paper, it makes me smile.  It is the little things that make up the best part of your days.

Nutrition and Checkups are the Foundation for Healthy Cats.

We know that good nutrition and regular visits to the veterinarian lay the foundation for your cat’s physical health but their mental well-being is just as important.  Studies show that many of the chronic health problems of domestic cats are directly or indirectly related to not only nutritional choices but on the lifestyle changes we force upon our cats. Environmental enrichment ensures that your house cat will get the mental stimulation they need for a healthy happy life.

Annie Playing with Catit

Environmental Enrichment Keeps Your House Cat Happy.

You can strengthen the bond with your cat by interacting with  them  through play and exercise, grooming and giving treats. We play with Annie, Eddie and Mercy each night after dinner.  Lately we have been teaching Annie to jump through a hoop.  We just hold the hoop out and say, “Annie, jump!” and she gets so excited she leaps through the hoop and then dances for a treat.  Mercy and Eddie have been observing but not showing much interest in jumping through hoops for us but they still want their treats.  But yesterday, Eddie hopped up on a stool and when I said, “Eddie, Jump!”, he soared through the hoop to the other stool.  We all cheered his accomplishment.  We also like to play with wand toys and get all three cats to run through the house.  This type of play gets out all of the cats extra energy so they are more willing to settle down for the night and let us get some sleep.

One way to keep your cats from becoming bored with their toys is to rotate them.  Don’t put all their toys out at once but just give them one or two and switch them out regularly to keep the novelty factor of the toys. Eddie loves his little lion and his now tattered mouse that rattles.

Annie grooming comfort zone

We also spend time brushing the cats, checking their ears and trimming their claws.  Annie is the best at sitting patiently while she gets checked over.  Eddie takes the second place and Mercy I am afraid is in last place for willingness to be helped grooming. Annie also gets her teeth brushed and to our surprise, she tolerates it quite well.
