Tigers! New Rules! You Can Help!

Camouflaged among the pages of the Federal Register/Vol. 76, No. 162/ Monday, August 22, 2011/ Proposed Rules, pages 52297-52301, hidden between pages and pages of proposed rules,  the most important action to SAVE TIGERS in over 10 years is waiting for your support by just leaving a comment before September 21, 2011.

“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service propose to amend the regulations that implement the Endangered Species Act by removing inter-subspecific crossed or generic tiger (Panthera tigris)(i.e.,specimens not identified or identifiable as members of Bengal, Sumatran, Siberian or Indochinese subspecies from the list of species that are exempt from registration under the Captive-bred Wildlife (CBW) regulations.” To read the entire proposal, click here.

Don’t be overwhelmed when you see the words crammed on the pages. All you need to do is leave a comment in your own words. Simply say you are FOR the new rule rescinding the generic tiger exemption.  That is all you have to say and you will have done an amazing thing towards saving our big cat cousins.  It will only take about 30 seconds and it doesn’t cost a penny.  Won’t you please help? Click Here for the Comment form.

You might be wondering why this is so super important.  There is an estimated over 5,000 tigers in captivity in the United States and the reason we don’t know how many tigers are in captivity is because in 1998  the US Fish and Wildlife Service created a rule that exempted “generic” tigers from the permit and reporting requirements that apply to endangered species.  ALL tigers bred outside of Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited facilities are generic.

A generic tiger is a tiger that is not identifiable as  a  Bengal, Siberian, Sumatran or Indochinese subspecies. No matter what the facility may tell you, this type of breeding of tigers does not help the conservation of tigers in the wild or  the survival of the species in captivity. These are the tigers bred for photo opportunities with cubs. When the cubs have outgrown their “usefulness” in a few short months, they are often kept in crowded cages, sold into the canned hunting industry or to taxidermists as “trophies”.  These are the tigers that need rescued by reputable cat sanctuaries and why they are in constant need of our support both as volunteers and financially.

Increasing the supply of generic tigers supports the market for them and creates a greater opportunity for poachers to kill a wild tiger to sell its parts into the black market.  We have less than 3000 surviving wild tigers today.  There is no time to wait.  We must step up our protection of our big cat cousins.

Big Cat Rescue has a short video showing us what happens to  generic tiger cubs when they are born into these captive breeding facilities. Won’t you please leave a comment to help stop the captive breeding of generic tigers?

When you leave a comment on the  regulations.gov, Your voice in Federal Decision-Making, please come back and tell me what you said to help others that might be struggling to come up with their own words.  This is super important to me and all cats everywhere.  Thank you for helping!!!

How can people be so ignorant and callous??  These are precious creatures of nature. Ditch the stupidity and get educated about HUMANE treatment of animals in the wild – they should be left alone!  IDIOTIC what people do sometimes – what stupidity!!

What is the big deal about generic breeding.  it should not go on because it only makes it available to poachers to take what parts they want and then kill them.  As a strong supporterof wild life I urge you to stop this horrific treatment of these beautiful animals.    They are kept in crowded cages and not cared for for long periods.   Poachers  should get the same treatment that these poor animals are getting.  Those cats should be allowed to run free as God intended them to do.

Thanks for publicizing the opportunity to comment on this and providing the link!! I was happy to leave the following comment:
The big cats are so precious and so many (if not all) are endangered or critically endangered. We need to protect them all; we Must protect them all. Please end the species designations in terms of protection and protect ALL the big cats. It will be a poorer world if we lose any more of them. Our children and grandchildren will know what we were willing to do, and not willing to do, for them!

Human beings are hunting/killing and abusing these poor animals and get
away with it every day, but yet if the animal bites/mauls, attacks or
kills a human they are put down/killed, well maybe humans beings should
start getting the same treatment the bible says and eye for an eye, do
unto others what you would have done to you.  I think its only fair that
human beings are treated the same way they treat the animals.  Sorry if
i offend anyone but this is my thinking.  These wonderful creatures
need to be free so they can live there lives the way they should be
living, not in cages but in the wild were they belong FREE.  The ones in
the wild also need protecting from poacher’s who kill them just for
certain body parts and leave the rest of the body to just rot away, like
i said earlier the poacher’s should have the same done to them…  You will see this same comment by Tigeress6671, that was my comment before connecting this with my fb

Hi, Gracey.  Here is what I wrote:  I support rescinding the generic tiger exemption.  Hundreds of “generic tigers” live in difficult and dangerous captive situations across the United States.  Rescinding this exemption would allow for humane rescue and care for these abused animals.  Thank you for allowing me to speak my piece.

Cats are my favorite thing on the planet either big or small but these are wild animals not house cats and as cute as they are we need to remember that and help them in the wild not a cage for us to pet.  It always amazes me when they go after a human they get killed but use your brain they didn’t choose this life the human did they want to be free not taken from there mothers for profit.  Humans are very greedy and if you can do this you are not an animal lover.

right now on the morning news as i was submitting my comment, they were advertising an event going on at a local mall with a bunch of baby tigers!  when will this stop?!  yes they are cute but what they have to go thru for us to look at them is disgusting!  how can people who claim to love animals go see these abused babies?  what if there were human infants in cages being tossed around and not allowed any sleep and had to perform for our amusement?? people would be up in arms!
