Help Keep Your Cat Busy With Best Friends DIY Pet Toys

Cats are naturally curious, and this time of year there is plenty of bright and shiny items for little paws to investigate.  Keeping kitty away from decorations can be a challenge so this is a good time to introduce new cat approved toys to keep your cat safely engaged in play.

Best Friends Animal Society created a fun video to show you how to make a few pet toys to occupy your pets’ paws and help to redirect them away from your holiday decorations.

DIY Cat Toys To Keep Your Cat Occupied

You don’t have to run out and purchase a new toy to engage your cat in play.  You can use items you might already have in your home.

Here are a few puzzle feeder suggestions:

Aluminum Foil Treat Ball- Place a few cat treats on a sheet of aluminum foil and then loosely form the foil into  a ball.  Keep the foil ball open enough so your cat can work to free the treats without too much trouble.  Bonus if you can manage to keep the treats loose inside the foil ball so that the treats make a rattle noise.

Egg Carton Puzzle Feeder– Cut an egg carton in half and place treats inside the egg holders.  This will slow down your cat from gobbling the treats and keep them entertained as well.

Plastic Egg Puzzle Feeder- If you have plastic eggs left over from last Easter, these make great puzzle toys too. Simply place treats inside and let the cutouts in the egg encourage your cat to work until they free the food.

Decorate With Safety in Mind

The main thing is to enjoy the holiday season, and if you are worrying about your cat getting their paws into decorations that could hurt them, we suggest altering your decorations to keep all members of the family safe.

We know first-hand with Annie and Eddie that keeping them safe posed too much of a challenge, so until they are older, our holiday decorations are outside away from little paws.

The spirit of the season lives even without tinsel and the love that we receive from our cats is year round and not limited to one season.  Wishing you a safe and happy holiday season.
