Giving Thanks for Cats
Today we get the opportunity to slow down a bit and reflect. This is a privilege, to be able to take the time to relax and think about gratitude. Most days, we might get caught up in day to day tasks and lose sight of what matters most but on Thanksgiving, we get the chance to dwell on why we are grateful.
Annie comes to get me at the end of the day. When she thinks my work day should end she runs into the office, stretches up with both paws on my leg and give a slight tug. When I see her sweet little face with her big green eyes it melts my heart. Gracey used to do this same thing. I am grateful we were lucky enough to find Annie and that she is part of our family.
Eddie comes to greet us at the end of the day like a little bulldozer. When we are on the sofa he jumps up, puts his head down, squeezes in between our arm and body and snuggles as tight as he can. If there is a blanket, he burrows under the blanket to get as close to us as possible. Paul calls him his little ground mole. We are grateful Eddie shared a cage with Annie at the Grayson County Humane Society and that he is now part of our family too.
Bob napping in sunshine
Bob is such a nice cat. He is so gentle and calm. We wonder if he is just so grateful to be indoors and safe. No longer hungry or running for his life. No more pesky mites in his ears. He is truly so sweet and we are grateful he has joined our family. And today we celebrate Bob’s third indoor Thanksgiving.
Mercy is a cat of few meows, but when he wants his breakfast, he will not be denied. There is no sleeping in when Mercy meows. He gently walks up onto your arm or chest while you are sleeping, gets as close to your ear as possible and calls reveille! By the time he reaches our ear, we are usually awake but pretend to be asleep to let him have his moment. We are grateful that we found Mercy in the alley behind our home and that he has become a part of our family.
Giving Thanks for Cats and Contentment
Thanksgiving reminds me to be mindful of many things that we might take for granted on busy days. When I was in Kenya, I knew I would not take clean water for granted again. Still today, every time I turn on the faucet, I am grateful.
Now that winter is approaching and the cold wind pierces through our layers of clothing, I am grateful to seek refuge inside our home. We have a roof, and we have warmth. Annie is especially fond of the warmth of the fireplace.
We have family and friends that we love dearly. We have everything we need to be happy. Being content is underrated. In a world that celebrates excess I offer up the notion that contentment is in and of itself a blessing, a privilege and a reason to be grateful.
Thank you for stopping by and in the words of our sweet Gracey, “Thank you for being our friend.”
Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving.
