ONE every 15 Minutes
One elephant is killed every 15 minutes.
Today is the International March for Elephants that is organized by The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust through their iworry campaign. The peaceful marches will take place in 15 cities around the world representing the single largest demonstration of awareness for elephants. The ivory trade is an international crisis that must be acknowledged by governments world wide if we are to see any changes and hope for the elephant. At this rate of killing, African Elephants could become extinct in the wild by 2025.
March for the Elephants
Today, October 4, the peaceful marches will be concluding at Government Buildings where elephant supporters will hand over a letter carrying the voice of thousands of people calling for stricter penalties and urgent global change. The March for Elephants in Nairobi was canceled due to the recent events which took place in Nairobi in September. A vigil for those who tragically lost their lives in the attacks and also for the elephants who continue to fall victim to the ivory trade will take place at the Nairobi Nursery.

over Kenya that have been orphaned due to poaching or human-wildlife conflict. The nursery is located along the northern rim of Kenya’s Nairobi National Park. When I arrived in Nairobi before meeting up with our group to head into the field to study, I had the good fortune to visit the Elephant Orphanage. This visit was #1 on my list to visit if I had any free time in Nairobi
I had the pleasure of meeting Edwin Lusichi, the Head Baby Elephant Keeper at the orphanage. It was an honor to shake his hand, look into his eyes, and thank him from the bottom of my heart, for the work that he does saving orphaned elephants. Today is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, so it is the perfect day for the March for Elephants. And the perfect day to take a moment to participate even if we can’t be in one of the 15 cities where the marches are being held.

Wow I did not know we were losing that many elephants. That is really sad. I just don’t understand how anyone could want to hurt them or any other animal. I added my name to the list. Hope it helps.
