International Tiger Day!
Panthera began working in Parsa, three years ago when there were just seven tigers recorded. Today, Parsa’s tigers have more than doubled and are thriving. This is one of the most rapid and dramatic tiger recoveries documented. And what scientists have learned is that if we give tigers cover, space and protection, they will come back.
Panthera’s Tigers Forever in partnership with Nepal’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, National Trust for Nature Conservation and Zoological Society of London have increased Nepal’s wildlife patrol from 200 to 600 soldiers! This increase to a full battalion has given tigers the protection needed to migrate from neighboring Chitwan Park and produce new litters and territories.
There are signs of hope for tigers and it just doesn’t get much better than this amazing video of a tigress and her two cubs in Nepal. This is the first evidence of tiger cubs in Parsa Wildlife Reserve in nearly a decade.
Panthera’s Tigers Forever Program
Panthera’s Tigers Forever program’s laser focus on law enforcement includes well-trained boots on the ground, sophisticated conservation strategy, and technology, including a PoacherCam that stops poaching before it happens.
The Panthera Tiger Team works across Asia to outfit and train anti-poaching patrols, prevent the setting of snares, influence policy to ensure stricter sentencing for poachers, establish community informant networks, monitor tigers and prey, and more.
The presence of tiger mothers and cubs is rewarding evidence that this focus on site security is turning the tide for tigers. In five of the Tigers Forever sites, tigers have increased:
- Corbett Rajaji, India
- Manas, India
- Tambling, Indonesia
- Endau Rompin, Malaysia
- and Parsa, Nepal.
If these numbers increase to carrying capacities at all 17 sites, earth’s tiger population will increase by 22%. That is a number that will turn the tide for tigers.
Poacher Turned Guardian
This new video from Panthera explains the greatest threats facing tigers, including an interview with a former tiger poacher turned guardian and why Panthera’s Tigers Forever program has become the gold standard for saving the endangered species.
